About Keith Lyons

Keith Lyons is an award-winning writer who runs creative writing workshops and writer's retreats in Asia and Australasia. A former journalist, editor, publisher and communications consultant, Keith's writing and photography has been published around the world in books, magazines, newspapers, journals, anthologies and websites. His portfolio includes poetry, short stories, creative non-fiction, a novel and several travel guides. He has won a number of national writing awards in New Zealand, and he was shortlisted for the prestigious Pushcart Prize, which celebrates the best writing from small presses around the world. Recent writing includes a new travel guidebook for Myanmar (Burma), a creative writing collaboration on climate change with writers from Australia and New Zealand, and a grief memoir following the sudden death of his brother. Keith studied post-graduate journalism at Canterbury University and a research scholarship took him to the UK and US. He completed a number of courses at Victoria University's creative writing programme, the International Institute of Modern Letters, and also studied creative writing in Seattle. He has taught creative writing in New Zealand since 2000, and run writing workshops in Australia, Thailand, southwest China, Hong Kong and Bali. Workshop participants, former students, mentorees and clients have gone on to achieve their writing goals and pursue their publishing dreams – including acceptance into prestigious writing schools, publication, literary awards and prizes. |
He has worked with a number of internationally-recognised authors and leading publishing houses, and is active in readers and writers festivals and literary events. Keith's background in psychology and social sciences, combined with his love of writing have gained him a reputation for providing gentle encouragement and astute advice to empower writers. He uses personality tests such as Myers Briggs and writing exercises to help writers enhance their processes, style and voice. Keith offers courses for starting writers and has workshops on writing life stories, travel writing, and writing for healing. He provides manuscript consultation services including editing, assessment and advice on getting published. >From June to September each year he offers private and group writing retreats in the idyllic island of Bali, while workshops and retreats are scheduled for February, March and April in Australia and New Zealand.
